Id3ntity

by

Ward XVI

It’s been a long time coming; it’s five years since the release of the excellent Metamorphosis and the question is, was Id3ntity worth the wait? If you’ve already heard the singles Blood is the New Black, We Are Legion and the latest At the Window, (and if you haven’t, go and rectify that immediately, or Nurse Betty will be paying you a visit and you really don’t want that…) then you may think you have an idea of what’s to come. But nothing can prepare you for the end result, for the third, gloriously unhinged act in the Psychoberrie saga.

In short, this is without a doubt Ward XVI’s gothic masterpiece, a quantum leap forward in every element. Stitching together power, horror, a brutally emotional punch, superlative storytelling, theatricality and exceptional musicianship into an absolute monster, it’s not just an album, it’s an event, a piece of art that transcends the medium. It’s everything you wanted and more besides, with layer upon layer of complexity for the listener to explore and lose themselves in, finding more and more with each subsequent listen.

On vocals, Psychoberrie’s delivery is utterly compelling and beguiling throughout, her range, versatility and ability to convey the inner torment and emotions of her protagonist unparallelled, breaking your heart one minute, threatening to visit extreme violence on those who cross her the next. Her storytelling prowess is breathlessly compelling and affecting, complemented with a number of short effective interludes between songs to drive the narrative forward. Deployed sparingly they never outstay their welcome, but provide the glue between the songs holding the whole thing together. And it’s as a cohesive whole that Id3ntity truly flies; whilst on their own each song is a fabulous mini-epic in its own right, when heard together as one longer piece of work (a gothic theatrical, metal suite you might say) Ide3tity becomes something that truly is greater than the sum of its individual parts.

And what of those songs? Without giving too much away – as you really need to discover their wickedly dramatic intricacies for yourself – each one is a blood-encrusted diamond, with more hooks than a Cenobite convention. So, Into the Wilderness with its gothic chanting backing vocals, Psychoberrie’s menacing vocal lines and some fabulous soloing ability is truly something to behold. In fact, the guitar work throughout from Dok Von Stottenstein is uniformly magnificent, displaying dazzling dexterity, phenomenal melodies and tasteful choices that form a key component in the textures and overall sound of the band.

At the Window meanwhile is quite a simply stunning piece of music that incorporates all Ward XVIs trademarks and more besides. Lush keys and an orchestral backing introduce the track, before Psychoberrie’s vocal comes in, sweeping and quieter at first, then the words are spat out, laced with venom and bile. Rage and anger personified, with another emotively devastating guitar solo from the Dok, to call it dramatic would be a colossal understatement – really this one needs to be heard again and again to begin to appreciate its sinister charms.

Then there’s the wonderfully titled Amoeba of Madness, almost gentle at least to start with, with delicate keys and a confessional vocal from Psychoberrie and once again we’re treated to some more of the most intelligent and erudite lyrics that you’re likely to hear, with guitars and keys complementing each other in a beautifully dark and melodic danse macabre.

All this talk of storytelling and theatricality is all well and good I hear you say, but does it actually rock? That’s an emphatic, hell yeah; take the fantastic Macabaret, that thunders along before the Dok unleashes a ridiculously amazing solo that is surely one of the album’s highlights. And of course, you can’t underestimate the visceral impact of first single Blood is the New Black initiated by a dark dystopian keyboard and guitar industrial metal intro, complete with a rip-roaring blood curdling death metal scream. Along the way we get the industrial metal with full on “whoa whoa” keys, Psychoberrie taking the reins with an almost rap like vocal throughout the verse, it’s constantly underlined with almost hypnotic, metronomic drums. The journey takes a huge left turn when an almost reggae break somehow manages to segue its way in before the full-on wrath of a death metal onslaught is unleashed, including a death metal scream rap! This track manages to completely terrify but will also have you bouncing and dancing along with it all at the same time.

Grandiose in ambition, devastating in its execution, Ide3ntity is a clear contender for album of the year. It’s a phenomenal achievement containing more ideas, imagination and musical complexity than most bands have in their entire career, it’s an opus that legions of their fans will take to their dark Stygian hearts and like those albums of our youth, will surely be discussed, dissected and celebrated for decades to come. Over the years there have been some truly magnificent concept/story albums (Operation Mindcrime, Bat out of Hell, to name but two) but very rarely have their sequels been as successful or come close to matching the impact of the original. Ward XVI have managed to buck that trend, not only in continuing the ongoing story, but building on it and bringing it to a hugely dynamic and satisfactory conclusion, making Id3ntity an absolute tour-deforce, a shining example of truly inspired songwriting, musicianship and storytelling.

Ward XVI, the monster you made is coming to life and when it throws off its shackles and steps into the light on 11 July, Id3ntity is going to terrorise the music scene (in the best possible way) and if there is any justice propel the band ever onwards and upwards to bigger and better things…

And what of Psychoberrie’s tale? Is Id3ntity the beginning of the end, or merely the end of the beginning…only time and the twisted imaginations of this wonderfully unique Preston band will tell…
