Single Review
We Are Legion
by
Ward XVI
Ward XVI, Preston’s maestros of the macabre return to haunt your dreams and fuel your nightmares with the deliciously dark and twisted We Are Legion.
The second single and final track on the band’s highly anticipated long-player Id3ntity (out 11 July 2025), it will be fascinating to see how We Are Legion fits into the over-arcing chronicle of Psychoberrie, as the third instalment of her story draws to a no doubt blood-soaked and epic finale.
But as a standalone song however, it’s a clarion call to the Inmates, a dark hymn for the disenfranchised and the lovers of the madness. Built around a hypnotic, eddying, synth riff that weaves in and out of the Doktor’s brutal buzz-saw industrial guitar, and Psychoberrie’s vocals at her seductively murderous best, this is Ward XVI demanding their place at the table, leaving absolutely no doubt that they are the undisputed heirs apparent to the shock rock/theatrical throne. We Are Legion is their manifesto writ large, a bruising masterpiece that in common with first single Blood is the New Black sees the band making huge strides forward in terms of song-writing, sophistication and performance taking their unique approach to ever higher levels.
It's a big dominating sound capturing the intensity, insanity and swirling emotions of the narrative, enhanced by superb production that blends all the elements together – and there’s an awful lot going on in the song - into one dramatic and cohesive whole. So, Bam Bam’s drums are deployed perfectly with choice double bass patterns punctuating the chorus, whilst Wolfy’s bass anchors everything together. Rico meanwhile adds extra bite and venom with his primal, growling backing vocals adding another layer to the maelstrom of edgy aggression and danger that the band conjure.
Whatever you call what they do, Ward XVI are an all-encompassing onslaught on the senses, challenging, wonderfully visceral and quite simply like nothing else on the scene today. Taking the old school horror concept of Alice Cooper along with newer industrial metal drama a la Rammstein by way of the Grand Guignol and all points in between, they have reinvigorated and re-imagined the genre for the 21st Century creating something that pays homage to its forefathers whilst being a whole new Frankenstein’s monster of shock horror delight, in and of itself.
For the full experience, you really need to see them in the live setting, where they bring Psychoberrie’s story to violent, gore-soaked technicolour life and with a launch show in Manchester in July, promising bigger and better and (probably!) more blood than ever before, and with a slew of dates later in the year, there’s never been a better time to join the inmates of Ward XVI.
So, what are you waiting for? The doors to the asylum are open, come on in, we’ve been expecting you…we are Legion, we are one, we are the collective...join us...
